Health Guardians of America — the health project arm of the medical health organization — continuously aims to promote, uphold, and protect transparency for our stakeholders in the organization.
We are pleased to announce that all members are now able to view our fiscal year end financial statements published annually. After several months of exploring various firms, we have retained the professional services of Lauren Warddrip at Singular Accounting (www.singularaccounting.com). The accounting firm processes our financial records to ensure we are compliant each year. The firm is also in the process of setting up a formal reimbursement policy. Additionally, we uploaded our 501(c)(3) tax exemption status from both the state and federal levels. These documents are available under the resources section of our members-only website.
While we are a non-profit organization with a tax exemption code, we have not and do not accept private donations to ensure we exist as an independent entity. As a medical health organization with a preventive medicine health project, we believe it is imperative that our entity operates with transparency and in the best interest of our health participants. This means we do not guarantee letters of recommendation and national director positions to promote a meritocratic culture for our student members. As it should be, we select students for leadership roles and write our recommendation letters based on merit using quantifiable metrics for performance evaluation.
Our digital health project is a subscription-based platform that incentivizes college students to exercise consistently. The platform design is engineered to translate the public health recommendations of the World Health Organization, the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Surgeon General. The incentivization of exercise built into the platform for health participants has been explored in medical literature and based on evidence-based clinical studies. The subscription model is outsourced to a technology subsidiary represented and verified from a legal perspective by Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Palo Alto, California — in addition to the PayPal legal team who confirmed and approved our entity in servicing our financial transactions.
Since inception at Berkeley, we have successfully created a self-sustaining organization and fundraised over $100,000 through health commitments and membership services. We continue to make improvements across the organization to accommodate additional funding sources for the health project such as the White Coat Fellows Program and a clinical research program to document our health project experience. We also aim to offer more opportunities for pre-medical, pre-dental students and MD/DDS students to advance their professional careers.
